Brownell, Kathryn Cramer. Showbiz Politics. Chapel Hill : The University of North Carolina Press. 2014. Dr. Kathryn Cramer Brownell is an assistant professor of history at Purdue University. Her primary focus is the cross between politics and cultural history. Her book is about the different ways in which Hollywood and the Government united so that there could a wide scale of media productions that promoted the defense all things American. Reel inequality: Hollywood actors and racism. New Brunswick, NJ: Rutgers University Press, 2017. Nancy Wang Yuen is a graduate of UCLA and her current research focuses on race in Hollywood in terms of film, television, and other forms of media. In her book, she talks about #OscarsSoWhite, this term came about after the Oscars for two years in a row had an white nomination roster. The hashtag was made by April Reign in 2015, and she made it to highlight the need for diversity in Hollywood. It is important, because by the hashtag going viral it was able to give mass attention to the issues and create platform for people to express their opinions and understand what is going on. In her book, Nancy Wang Yuen shows how #OscarsSoWhite is not an isolated situation, but rather a result of many hidden ideologies in Hollywood finally coming out. She also speaks on the experiences of actors of color and “how actors of color cuffer and survive in spite of the odds.” She argues that even though in some ways the overt racial divide in Hollywood has diminished a little bit, there is still covert barriers in everything from agents to film sets in which actors of color continually have to face stereotypes that hold them back from reaching their full potential.She uses a combination of data, primary sources and extensive research to defend her claims on the racial state of Hollywood. Benshoff is a professor at the University of North Texas for Media Arts, and Sean Griffin is an associate professor at Southern Methodist University in the division of cinema-television. In their book and in particularly their chapters on culture, American film, and race; they talk about the the development of misrepresentations in film, the power of film as well as the making of films. The book argues that everything in the film industry from development, behind the scenes, and the movies themselves in some way shape or form coincide with the social, political, and cultural events. I will use this book to take a look at the underlying representations and control that goes around in Hollywood.

Kaling, Mindy. Why not me? New York: Crown Archetype, 2015. Mindy Kaling is a well known comedian actress and writer. In her book, she talks about her life, and in particular her life as a women of color in Hollywood. She speaks on things that primarily have to do with just being an actress in Hollywood, but also a minority in the case of being a woman and being of color. I will use this book to gain a primary insight into the life of a person who talk about the realities of race in Hollywood beyond the statistics, and someone who can provide real life
