Through time, Celie starts growing as an independent person although she found Shug, who she loved very much. She learned how to speak up by being influenced by the people that surrounded her and encouraged her to fight back. The time when she really grew was when she gained a relationship with Shug Avery and became very intimate friends with. Shug helped her to be herself and made her gain that self-esteem she lost. Shug was the only person that knew her past abuse and helped her feel love. With the help of Shug, especially, she found her sister, Nettie, and her two lost kids. The moment where we see her great change was in the end when she decides to go back to see her Pa although she now knows he is her stepfather. When she finally speaks up about the abuse she went through when she was with Mr.____ and then lets him know that she is leaving him to go with Shug. After Shug decides to leave with another man, Celie and Mr.____ become close because they share the same heartbroken experience of her leaving but Celie no longer cries because she is less dependent of Shug and of any other person. We can see how Celie went from being abused and feeling helpless because she couldn’t fight because she was too afraid to fight and end up dead like her sister to a person who is
