Deep River themes Deep River is a short story where Shusaku Endo shares a religion messages through four characters. Each characters had different problems in their lives. In the novel Deep River, religion play bid role. One of the character name Otsu believe that there are multiple ways to get salvation not only through Christianity. “..God has many faces, and that he exists in all religion”p.122. This shows the unity of al religion. Many religion themes like rebirth, faith and pilgrimage discussed through the character stories.
Throughout the novel Deep River, Endo goes from one character to another telling their past to explain the cause of journey to India. One of the character Isobe, took the trip to India to search to his dead wife
