The Siberian Husky is a medium to large breed of working dog, They are native to northeastern Siberia. The genetic family which they belong to is the Spitz breed. what makes the Husky so recognizable is their pointed ears, thick double coat of fur, sickle tail and distinctive markings. Huskies are a very active and energetic breed, their ancestors come from the harsh and extremely cold environment. The Siberian Husky was bred by the native Chukchis of northeastern Asia. They were bred to pull heavy loads and bred to handle harsh Tundra like conditions. During the Nome gold rush the dogs were imported to Alaska then spread out in to the U.S. they were originally sent to Alaska and Canada as a sled dog but gained notoriety as a family pet and show dog. …show more content…
Upon arriving Goosak entered his Siberian Dog team in a 408 mile all Alaska sweepstakes race, hoping to be the winner and winning the $10,000 purse. The Race officials dismissed his team as lightweights and no match for the competing teams. Goosaks team did take third place the other racers were impressed by what the little dogs could do. The Siberian Husky’s reputation spread quickly through continent.
After their 1909 race, there were three Siberian teams that had entered next years All Alaska Race. The three teams placed first, second and fourth place. The winning set a record which wasn’t broken till seven years later. It’s not surprising at all the Siberian Husky gained the people of Alaskas respect and admiration.
