Topic #7: Describe the significance of Kamala in the novel.

There may always be that one person that has implemented great value to opening one’s eyes, making them perceive what lies in store for them. How great can one’s impact have on a person? In Hermann Hesse’s novel Siddhartha, Courtesan Kamala brings protagonist Siddhartha through an experience that assists his path to seeking enlightenment more evident. Her significance has made Siddhartha further cognizant of the secular world, of business and lust, but more predominantly, understand why this depressing experience was of reason to his benefit.

One day he and Vasudeva heard horrific cries and approaching the screams, they noticed Kamala had been bitten by a poisonous snake with a little boy near her. Kamala had intended to see the Buddha to receive peace, but “instead she had only found Siddhartha, and it was good, just as good if she had seen the other.” (113). Unable to tell Siddhartha this due to the poison, she passed away, leaving her son with Siddhartha. Now taking on this responsibility of a parent for the boy, Siddhartha authentically sensed love for the first time. As Siddhartha’s son exposed signs of everlasting intolerance toward Siddhartha and Vasudeva due to being raised wealthy and with servants, Siddhartha continuously chose to tolerate his behavior by virtue of his love. Despite the fact of Siddhartha once thinking he was unable to love, his son had proved this notion to be wrong. Kamala had brought him what was the link to love that had remained blinded within Siddhartha. He had found unconditional love, which became a problem for the boy. It takes two to manage a relationship, and with the boy’s disobedience, opened another kind of Samsara, though this time, dealing with heartbreak. Following his son’s departure, it
