Being literate in today's society is extremely important to me. From something as small as being able to read street signs, to being able to fill out job applications, reading and writing are important parts of life. People can make it through life being illiterate, but the opportunities presented to that person are quite slim. It would be a challenge to understand every day commodities and undertakings that literate people take for granted. I have realized while driving to school everyday that there are many times, that being able to read is a necessity. It is important to be able to read the various road signs in order to be a safe driver. It is commonly known that a big red sign means 'stop', but what about a school zone sign? Someone would not know to slow down during school hours if they were unable to read. Without knowing how to read, being able to fill out a job application would be very difficult for someone. There would be an obvious discrepancy between the literate persons and the illiterates writing. Even if they got a job, they would not be able to do anything at the job that requires them to read even simple dissertations. An example would be working at a fast food chain.
