The whole incident happened because the child managed to climb over the barrier and fall into the gorilla’s enclosure. This was partly the zoo’s fault as the fence blocking the enclosure was described by a news reporter as a ‘baby door usually found on steps.’ With such a low fence anyone could get over with ease, in the zoo’s defense a zookeeper stated that ‘The zoo is trying to minimize on visible fencing in attempt to have a richer photography experience.’ This is a valid argument; however, it is no reason to slacken on the safety of the enclosure. Putting aside the safety flaws of the enclosure, Isiah’s parents should have kept a closer eye on him, and ‘the zoo is no place for kids to play,’ one of the commenters said. The parents Michelle Gregg and Deonne Dickerson have four children, youngest of which it three-years-old. Yet the parents failed keep an eye on their youngest child who managed to end up in Harambe’s enclosure. I believe this is completely the parents fault, and if they had paid attention to their son none of this would have happened. Witnesses say that the child was telling his mum that he ‘wanted to swim in the water’, but the mother just ignored her child. Only to find moments later that little Isiah had already taken a three meter fall into the shallow water.
