Historical Leaders and their Writings Jonathan Edwards speaks quietly without emotion. He once read a six hour work in a level voice. Jonathan Edwards sermon “Sinners in the hands of an angry God” is one of his significant works he read it in a calm manner. Despite his calm manner, his listeners are said to have screamed in terror, and Edwards had to stop several times to ask for silence. Patrick Henry denounces the British King and urges the colonies to fight for independence Making most powerful country at the time, and the odds against the colonists where overwhelming. So in order to persuade them to fight he made a speech “Speech in the Virginia Convention”. If the colonies had failed to win independence, Henry could have been executed for treason. Jonathan Edwards scared his listeners to seek salvation in gods hands. He gave images of gods wrath and destruction that are originally from the Old Testament of the King James bible. Just like how he said “The wrath of God is like great waters that are damned for the present; they increase more and more, and rise higher and higher, till an outlet is given.” This type of evidence scared people because it was common for them to read it every day. Patrick Henry was inspiring and made valid points to persuade his listeners. He said “If we wish to be free, if we mean to preserve inviolate those inestimable privileges for which we have been so long contending, if we mean not basely to abandon the noble struggle in which we have been so long engaged, and which we have pledged ourselves never to abandon until the glorious object of our contest shall be obtained, we must fight!” and his most famous quote “give me liberty or give me
