Beneatha Younger, a young college student, has the dream of becoming a doctor. Her mother, Mama, and sister-in--law, Ruth, are supportive of her choice, while her brother, Walter, is not as encouraging, saying, “I’m interested in you. Something wrong with that? Ain’t many girls who decide to be a doctor” (Hansberry 36). Walter doubts Beneatha and her career choices by asking her about them constantly, seeing if she would change her mind. Beneatha’s relationship with George Murchinson, a rich boy she goes on dates with, also doubts her choice to become a doctor, not believing her, “... but first I’m going to be a doctor, and George, for one, still thinks that’s funny” (Hansberry 50). George does not take her dream seriously, making it harder to accomplish it while trying to maintain a relationship with him. While having those relationships going the same way they are, it makes achieving her dream
