Since the late 16th century since first being discovered, the sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum have been exposed to the elements both human and natural alike. These elements have caused great damage to both sites, the quote from Henry de Saint-Blanquat reinforces the situation of the towns since their discovery. The problems are caused by many things such as lack of financial support, tourism, the environmental factors and the previous conservation. Nevertheless with joint efforts from the Italian and International Organisations and groups these problems are being solved.

Both sites are very popular tourist attractions and as a result from the 2.5 million visitors each year the ancient walkways have been worn and torn exposing lead plumbing which are broken. This also leads to another problem caused by tourism which is vandalism and robbery. People usually paint or carve into surfaces destroying which was originally on the wall. Robbery plays a big part since 1977 there have been over 614 items stolen from the sites the most important being 14 frescoes from the house of gladiators in 1977. However, funding is received from the tourism, so it is a critical factor in order to restore Pompeii and Herculaneum. Though there are many people and institutions that are working at solving this problem. The “Pompeii Trust” are aiming and are educating tourists and the community in hopes of enlightening them to the important of conservation and are hoping that control of the tourist will help limit the impact they have on the sites. Even things such as changing tourist routes every few months they hope to wear down the pathways at a slower rate. Also guards are a great solution to help prevent people from stealing or entering areas that are not allowed but cannot patrol restricted areas as often as they should because they are restricted and nobody at all is supposed to be
