This passage is set in a public place following the wedding of Romeo and Juliet. There is a lot of action and drama and it builds to the climax of the play. Mercutio and Benvolio are out on the streets, then the Capulets enter. We are reminded of the social environment of the play and that the Capulets and Montagues still have bad blood. The scene quickly turns to an argument and then a fight.

From the moment the Capulets enter we see Benvolio’s nature showing through. He is not keen on fighting and is aware of the consequences of fighting. He is quite cautious that they are in the public and “reason coldly of your grievances”, Meanwhile Mercutio isn’t afraid and is ready and willing to fight.
