Religion has existed around the world for many centuries. Currently there are 4,200 different religions that people practice everyday around the globe . In feudal Japan the main religion is Shintoism while in feudal Europe they followed Christianity. The word Shinto comes from the Chinese word Shen-tao, which means “the way of the gods”. The Japanese religion is as old as Japan itself, (500 BCE) . Japanese do not usually think of Shinto specifically as a religion, they see it more as an aspect of Japanese life. Shinto has coexisted happily with Buddhism for centuries. It has around 3,000,000 followers. Roman Catholicism was first introduced during the 1st – 5th centuries CE. It has about 1,170,000,000

The foundation of Japan started when the universe was created. A number of kami appeared spontaneously and a rise to brother Izanagi and sister Izanami (figure 2 ). The pair thrust a jewelled spear into the ocean forming the central island of Japan. Izanagi and Izanami had many children and their offspring included the island of Japan and some kami. When Izanami gave birth to the fire kami, she was badly burnt and died. Izanagi was furious that he beheaded his son and went to look for his wife in the underworld. When he arrived, he was too late. She was already deformed flesh with maggots all over her body. Being repulsed by the sight, he went back to earth and left Izanami to rule the underworld. Feeling unclean from having contact with the dead he took a bath to purify himself. The drops of fresh clean water that fell from his body made the rest of Japan. Roman Catholicism believe God created everything. “And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.” Genesis 1 3:4. This is how the Bible describes the beginning. The origin of a Torii is said to come from an old Japanese legend. The Torii was originally a bird perch where the people placed all the towns roosters to make the sun goddess come out of her cave where she had been hiding from her prankster brother. The Sun goddess, Amaterasu blocked the entrance with a rock causing an eclipse. The town worried that if she didn’t come out they would all die. An old mans advice was build a bird perch out of wood and place all the towns’ roosters on this perch. They all started to crow noisily, causing the curious sun goddess to peak through the cave. With the door opened a crack, a large Sumo wrestler pushed the rock away letting the sun out. The bird perch was the first Torii gate. From then on, the Torii became a symbol of prosperity and good fortune. Shrine visitors write their wishes on wooden plates and hang them at the shrine in hopes of their wishes coming true. In some cases, if a wish has come true, they hang another wooden plate for gratitude. The church is where Christians unite to worship the Lord (figure 5 ). According to the Bible, Christians must gather with the objective of spreading the word of Jesus Christ whilst maintaining their faith. The church began with the twelve apostles whom where the ones who accompanied Jesus on his journey. Their mission was to learn and disperse the teachings of Jesus around the world.
