According to our text, Texas Politics-The Texas Constitution, a constitution is described as a charter or plan of government that represents a pact between the government and the governed. Constitutions describe how much power a government has, will have, and the people who enforce these powers. The United States constitution established the laws in America and gave certain rights to citizens. The current Texas constitution is called the Constitution of 1876. It is the sixth constitution by which Texas has been governed since it received independence from Mexico in 1836. One way that the U.S and the Texas Constitution are similar is that both documents incorporate the principles of a democratic government, where the supreme power usually comes from the people. Another way both of the constitutions are similar is that they include a Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights in each constitution has a lot of similarities to each other. The constitutions, both contain a system of checks and balances and the separation of power between the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of the government. Another similarity between the two documents is that they both contain the concept of federalism. Federalism is a method of government that allows two or more entities share control over the same geographic region. There 136,606 to 56,652 votes that helped ratify the Texas constitution and to this day, it remains the basic law of Texas . Texas has been governed by seven constitutions. The first constitution was called the Mexican Constitution of Coahuila y Tejas . The second Texas constitution was called the Constitution of the state of Texas and it was written when Texas gained independence from Mexico in 1836. The third Texas constitution was called The Texas State Constitution. It was published in 1845 when Texas became a part of the union. The fourth Texas Constitution was drafted in 1861 as Texas joined the Confederate Army . The fifth Texas Constitution was called the Constitution of 1866 and it was written when Texas joined the Union after the Civil War . The sixth Texas Constitution was called the Constitution of 1869 which was written during the Reconstruction. The seventh constitution was called the Constitution of 1876. The members of the Grange drafted the document in response to the Reconstruction government. The Texas Constitution consists of 17 articles which includes The Bill of Rights, the structure of Texas Government, Local Government, Private Corporations, the Public Lands and Land office, and Public policy.
