Justice, according to dictionary.com, means to act or treat justly or fairly. The issue at hand is whether or not justice exists for everyone. While many great leaders and thinkers such as Henry David Thoreau and Martin Luther King tied in morality with justice, it contributes to the idea that if an act is committed and has moral reasoning behind it, it should be justified. Both Thoreau and King argue that it should be justified to disobey government if, as citizens, we feel it is corrupt. It is the individual’s responsibility to take action against any corrupt laws of government, because it is legally their duty and responsibility to stand up for what’s right. If the individual fails to speak up for themselves we will not be living in a democracy. We as a people should no longer “…apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth, and listen to the song of that siren till she transforms us into beasts (Patrick Henry). We as the great people of this great nation should pay attention to our surroundings more and realize our responsibility as a people to eliminate the injustices that are occurring every day. Patrick Henry asked the King, “Are we disposed to be of the number of those who, having eyes, see not, and, having ears, hear not, the things which so nearly concern their temporal salvation?” We do not need this to become of our society. Those before us such as Thoreau and King either became prominent members in their society or led a movement with those who had similar beliefs make a difference in the world why can’t we? If an injustice is happening around you, ignoring it cause it to become a problem. Rules and laws change but the affect they have on the individual(s) can be detrimental to their well-being.
