One of the most important ideas Simone de Beauvoir expresses in her writings is the danger that idolization ideas and people can bring with it. To idolize something is to accept it as truth and thus deny any ambiguity with it. This problem is very prevalent in people who have left their mark on the world. When a person does a great deed they are often defined by it, to the point where it becomes hard to see the decisions and uncertainness that were apart of it. Then when we feel a “lack in ourselves” of what the right decision or choice to make is, we may look to a decision or a symbol as an absolute truth. The serious man has unambiguously chosen a way of life as the only way, now when you take this cause and begin to push it on people is where it becomes unethical. It becomes a form of oppression as you are directly laying out a way of life as the way of life, in doing this you are pulling people away from the truth of ambiguity and into the comfort of the serious man. However after World War Two we took on another role as a world police. This title stayed with us justifying many conflicts such as the Vietnam War to our Involvement in the middle east today. Yet in doing this we as a whole are denying our freedoms as a country. The united states is made up of over three hundred and twenty three million individual people with their own ideas and biases. According to Beauvoir being committed to an idea doesn't mean you deny your freedoms as long as you acknowledge the fact that the purpose you follow is only given meaning by you. It is when you begin to define the way you act because of an idea or purpose being your truth does it fall into the category of Serious Man, which is where america as a whole lives
