Francis Drake Exploring the world in the early days was popular and the main reason people explored it was for gold, God, and glory. All of these things could make an explorer super well-known. An example of an English explorer would be Sir Francis Drake, who traded slaves and was considered a hero to the English. Drake was best known for being the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe. Sir Francis Drake was born in Devonshire, England between 1540-44 and died in 1596. Drake's early life consisted of being the eldest of twelve older brothers. He had no education and apprenticed with a neighbor who was a sailor. Drake's father was a preacher and a farmer. Francis Drake was known as an English hero because he was key to gaining much of England's riches and naval successes. Queen Elizabeth I enlisted Drake as a privateer to sail the Americas. Although Drake's ways were considered by some to be villainous and cruel, he still was considered vital to Elizabeth. One of Drake's achievements being that he and his second cousin, Richard Hawkins, led one of the first slavery trips to West Africa in 1567. At the time, slavery was illegal. Although it was considered ok if they were enslaved, non-protestants or criminals.
