In every work of literature, we are introduced to a variety of characters who each have their own part in the story and lead up to a variety of outcomes or main plot. The most common character archetypes are the hero and the villain. There are other common subtypes as well, but not a frequent archetype is the Ambiguous characters. They usually are what drives the main character to their development, who in this case was Sir Gawain. He was tested for his courage by an “Ambiguous” character, who in this story was presented as the “Green Knight”. He acts as a significant part of Gawain's story as he challenges his character/chivalry and makes him face difficult decisions.
