Resource service delivery area and the population served: My site visit was at St. Bernard Hospital, which is located at 326 W. 64th Street Chicago Il. 773-962-3965 The contact people were Jameisa Jamison nurse manager and Mary Shears(MSW). There are two programs at the hospital one being inpatient adult psychiatric services and inpatient detox. The hospital serves people that are in immediate crisis and are in need of inpatient psychiatric stabilization to prevent harm to themselves and/or to others, and those suffering with substance abuse issues that require immediate detox..
St. Bernard is located in an area where these services are definetly needed. The unfortunate issue is that patients sometimes out number staff.
. Another population is the General Adult Unit, this population comes into the hospital voluntarily mostly with issues of depression and anxiety. One interesting component with this group is that they are allowed to leave the facility escorted by staff for walks around the campus as part of their treatment. The only drawback with this practice is that some may decide to leave the program. Once they are outside of the hospital, there is not much that staff can do to keep them from leaving. . The adolescent girls and boys population is another group of individuals there for problems ranging from aggressive behavior, suicidal ideation, sexually inappropriate behavior, to depression. It was interesting to find that programs were on the same unit for both genders. These groups programmed together, but were separated into two corridors at bedtime. Another program was the I.T.U this is the intense population. These individuals are there for serious psychiatric treatment. Their issues require a more intense approach due to the level of functioning. This population is usually brought in involuntarily because they have decompensated and are unable to care for themselves. The hospital’s responsibility is to stabilize these individuals so that they are able to function and no longer pose a threat to themselves or anyone. The program offers detoxification, and programs geared toward drug rehabilitation along with psychiatric treatment. (chicagolakeshorehospital.com)
