The reason when Douglas won’t debate the slavery question this article is because he believes to follow what is stated in the Constitution; the freedom of choice. As the first amendment entitles, Missouri and Illinois have the right to do as they please as far as allowing or disallowing slavery in their region. But then there is the other argument as that the thirteenth amendment entitles. which is banishes the practice of servitude and slavery in the United States. So in his perspective, he is being pulled between the two documents; a obey one and disobey the other scenario.
