Also in the New Testament, it is stated that God does not distinguish between masters and slaves, but rather everyone is equal in the eyes of God. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” The Bible tends to reverse its opinions quite frequently between the Old and New Testament, whether it is about owning the slaves or mistreating them. The stories in the bible are very contradictory, and somewhat hypocritical, changing opinions frequently throughout every testament and passage.
Another reason the Europeans justified slavery was because during this time, slavery was widespread throughout Africa. A chattel slave is an individual that is treated as their master’s property that can be bought and sold. Although some may believe chattel slavery only existed in Europe as well as the United States, chattel slavery did exist throughout Africa as well.
