A sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is an irreversible bariatric surgical procedure, in which the greater curvature and fundus of the stomach is resected and extracted, to create a tubular-shaped stomach or “sleeve”. This procedure is typically performed laparoscopically as this approach is minimally invasive and offers several advantages including: less blood loss, a lower incidence of wound infections, a faster recovery time, and a shorter hospital stay compared with the open approach1,2. The advantages of no bowel rearrangement, lack of a foreign body, and preservation of the pylorus have resulted in the increasing popularity of this procedure. According to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the SG is now the most widely performed bariatric surgery in the US3.
