Grace Schroeder Professor Gregg FYS 112 4 April 2024 In Malcolm Gladwell’s essay, Small Change: Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted, an argument arises that genuine, stable change requires a sense of hierarchical strategy and personal relationships. These elements of society are lacking within the realm of social media and are essential to creating solid change within the world. Gladwell believes that while social media platforms offer connections and distribution for information to spread within a community, the media lacks the commitment and depth that is required for an effective social transformation. This essay reflects the meaning behind Gladwell’s essay and the importance of personal connection and community in effective social change while evaluating the restricted sides of social media. When considering hierarchical structures, they provide a sense of direction, security, and responsibility for sustaining and achieving long-term goals when relating to change. Without a distinct hierarchy, communities risk a sense of weakness and the possibility of corruption which would impede their ability to establish change. On the other hand, social media platforms lack that sense of stability and organization due to the platforms often creating an ever-changing and disorganized nature for users. This gives social media the inability to construct a clear hierarchical structure necessary for a determined action of change. While social media informs and inspires people every day, it lacks the organizational regulation that is essential for change.
