I think it's the second one. I think he did not get emotionally connected to the people on purpose, to make the goodbyes easier. Holden has not yet told us a lot about his emotions thus far but I think deep down he cares more than he lets on.

Holden says this after Mr. Spencer read aloud his lousy essay paper. I believe this quote shows Holden’s maturity and respect. He has enough respect for other people to not embarrass them by reading their essay out loud. This also shows his maturity by not making someone else look like a fool for his own enjoyment. This quote ultimately makes me think that Holden would be a great friend.
