The night before my first day was slightly nerve-wracking. My shift was at 7 am, but even at 2 am I was more awake than a two-year-old on caffeine. After a few hours of tossing and turning, I decided to get up and prepare for my first day. I was exceedingly happy that my commute was a 3-minute stroll up my tree-lined street versus 30 to 45 minutes gridlocked in morning traffic. When I finally arrived at the edge of the minuscule parking lot, I was awarded my first up-close glimpse of the sparkling new building. The next thing I noticed was the flurry of activity by all the identically-uniformed employees, my co-workers now. For the first hour, understandably, consisted of filling out a mountain of paperwork. Next, we learned to peel bananas, since allegedly, our store goes through a small nurseries’ worth of bananas each week. Since bananas are always needed, Smoothie King has a super hack at speed peeling. Very useful indeed. The rest of my day, until lunch, was made up of making smoothies, scooping ice cream and memorizing the menu board, which is no small feat.
