The two countries I compared for this social barometer essay was the United States and Australia. Australia is the only country that is also considered a continent. Over the past few years Australia has become much more competitive in both the economy and international relations. Australia also is home to 1 percent of the world’s biodiversity and that attracts many people. On the other hand this country has an aging population along with many environmental issues like floods and droughts. The United States is one of the most powerful Nation States. The economy is on a steady growth and there are rapid advances in technology and a low unemployment rate. All of these things matter because they can affect the social barometers in each country (World Factbook 2016). The first topic this essay will be touching on is the countries youth. I looked at the mental health barometers for the youth for each of these countries. I observed both the mental and physical health of both he United States and Australia. Mental health refers to suicide rates and physical health consists of smoking. Mental health of youth in the United Stated was fascinating because I had no idea about any of these numbers. Suicide rates in ages 18-25 were extremely shocking. Mental health for teenagers in Australia is a real concern. The records show that 28% of males between the ages of 15 to 24 committed suicide. For females it was only 4%. On the physical heath side, smoking cigarettes statistics are 35 % of males and 25% of females said they have smoked before in the last month. Theses percentages are much higher then a United States youth, which causes concern.
