The scholarly definition of crime is "The violation of laws enacted by society" (Conley 2013) Deviance and crime are not always the same as you gave us an explanation , Deviance can be positively sanctioned like being praised and it could also be negivtivly sanctioned by being punished it all depends how the social group takes it but crime on the other hand is always negative, for example you get put in jail for committing a crime or you could also get community service as your punishment . There are things that could be deviant but not criminal such as picking your nose that is not socially excepted anywhere ! if you pick your nose everyone will stop in stare at you but it is not a crime. There are also crimes that are not deviant and are not severely punished like being put in jail or doing community service like removing the tags off your mattress it says "Do not remove under the penalty of law" that is not deviant because most likely nobody pays attention to it and is not a big deal. A student who wants to archive good grades but is not interested in studying for example of putting time in effort onto there studies would be exemplifying the behavior of a "Innovator"(Conley 2013) because a innovator is a social deviant who wants something but is not willing to do everything to get it , meaning they would do it the wrong way such as stealing money , selling drugs et. in this case the student is not willing to put time and effort into the class so he cheats which is
