The Little Mermaid was created by Danish sculptor Edvard Eriksen in tribute to Danish storyteller Hans Christian Andersen. On January 6, 1998, the statue suffered an attack, losing a head in the process ("Copenhagen's Landmark Little Mermaid Statue Vandalized”). Another headline story was dedicated to an endangered Sumatran tiger, and his fight to save his paw, the endangered animal was located in Jakarta, Indonesia. Veterinarians worked for hours trying to save his front paw after it was caught in a wire trap ("Veterinarians Try to save Paw of Endangered Sumatran Tiger”). Also in the news of 1998, according to Shawn Pogatchnik, the leaders of Ireland were trying to end terrorism that they found themselves caught up in. Many movies made an impact on so many people as well. One movie from that time was Saving Private Ryan; a movie about a young band of solders that have to survive through rough terrain to bring back a brave solider from behind enemy lines. This movie won five academy awards, two golden globes, and eight other miscellaneous achievements (“Saving Private Ryan”). Saving Private Ryan is still, to this day, a world renown film. Another film of its time was Patch Adams starring Robin Williams as a young inspirational doctor who is out to change the world for the better (“Most Popular Feature Films Released In 1998”). Patch Adams comes in at number 22 of 1998 and was nominated for an academy award in 1999 (“Patch Adams Awards”). Although these movies were outstanding, the one that I remember personally was the famous film Hope Floats, starring Sandra Bullock as Birdee Calvert a girl who has to decide in her heart what is right (“Most Popular Feature Films Released In 1998”).
