EOT AP Biology The three types of chemical bonds are hydrogen bonds, chemical bonds, and ionic bonds. Hydrogen bonding is the ability of hydrogen to bind to a oxygen or nitrogen molecules. This allows water to bind with water molecules, which further allows a liquid to flow. An example of this would be our blood. Next, are the covalent bonds, who occur when valence electrons are shared. There are two types of covalent bonds; nonpolar and polar covalent bonds. Nonpolar occur when the electrons are share equally. Polar covalent bonds occur when an atom has greater electronegativity than others, which covalent bonds results in unequal sharing. The covalent bond strength is dependent on the electronegativity polar. Basically, saying the more negative the stronger Lastly, are the ionic bonds which are when the atoms attract valence electrons. So unequally that the more electronegativity atoms steals the electron. The Strength of these bonds is dependent on the environment. Ionic bonds are important because it creates salt which are compounds that are necessary for life.
