The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is an emotional story about a teenager, Katniss, who ‘volunteers’ in behalf of her younger sister in the annual ‘hunger games’. The ‘games’ are constructed of 24 tributes or players; these players are chosen, one boy and one girl, from each district. The purpose of the ‘hunger games’ is to worship the government in its control over the social structure of Panem. The tributes are chosen to be an image of their district to “fight to the death” for the entertainment of society.

The wealthy districts who have resources keep achieving victory in the ‘games’ while the poorer districts, such as District 12 remains without sufficient resources. Individuals are born into their social class or district. In The Hunger Games, Katniss was born into District 12, the poorest district. Their main contribution to society was coal mining. Family was essential to the well-being of society because they could trust one another. Collins showed the importance of family when Katniss displayed loyalty and bravery when taking Primrose’s place during the reaping. “I volunteer as tribute” yells Katniss as she runs up to the stage. This is an example of the government pressuring an individual to risk their life for family, in this case Katniss. This isn’t the first time Katniss has risked her life. She and her father had been hunting illegally which endangered them from the social hierarchy.
