In his article, "Inside the Solar-Hydrogen House: No More Power Bills - Ever," author David Biello takes a look into the life of Mike Strizki, a 51-year-old civil engineer from New Jersey who converted his two-story colonial home from grid fed to self-sufficient. The author uses this article to introduce the idea of solar and hydrogen power as alternative energy sources in place of those which are present in the majority of homes currently, such as coal, nuclear, or hydroelectric. A solar-hydrogen house is a home that runs entirely on power that is derived from renewable energy sources, namely solar power and hydrogen power, making it better for the environment, as well as reducing the energy bills of the owner to zero. Strizki has been interested in alternative energy sources for over twenty years, which drove him to invest $100,000 of his own money as well as $400,000 in state grants into his one of a kind system. …show more content…
On the roof Strizki has installed 56 photovoltaic cells on the roof of his garage to create solar energy. Batteries located along the inside wall of the are used to store approximately 80 kilowatt-hours of electricity. The second half of the system is the part that focuses on hydrogen. The system consists of an electrolyzer, which is a washing machine sized device used to convert water to electricity, as well as old propane tanks which are able to store up to 538 cubic meters of hydrogen and a plug cell fuel stack to recombine hydrogen and water to create
