By going to war, potential soldiers put themselves into a lot of danger knowing that they will be forced to take many risks, and even be expected to risk their lives on a daily basis. Yet, so many men and women proudly serve their country by working in the military, back then, and even now. There are so many dangers out there for soldiers that many don't even realize when first signing up. For example, in the civil war, many people thought that this would just be a short and easy war and they wouldn't even have to go out on the battlefield. Now, that seems completely crazy because we know what a bloody war it was. Charley, for example, just thought that signing up for the war would …show more content…
Charley later faced reality, and realized that war is a seriously dangerous and traumatizing thing, and that he may not make it home alive, but still fought boldly for his side and was a big part of winning the war. Charley Goddard fought many battles in the civil war, though he did get injured and sent home before the war was over. He fought in almost every battle except for Bull Run, because during this battle, he was ill with dysentery, and he couldn't be at more than one place at a time. When he was injured, in the battle of Gettysburg, he was shot and wounded severely. Though the paramedics patched him up the best they could, they could not save his life. He did make it home, and even got elected for county clerk on the basis of his war record, but his wounds, traumatization, and stress eventually killed him before he could serve in the office. Charley was a great, strong, and courageous soldier and was a huge part of the war, but sadly died at the young age of 23 years old because of his wounds. Charley died in December of 1868. Charley did get shot in battle, and he did suffer from dysentery for a short period of time, but there were things much worse than this included in war that he didn't have to deal with. Some of these dangers and risks of war include: sickness, disease, starvation, dehydration, mental traumatization (almost every soldier deals with this side effect of war), and many other dangers other than enemy fire. Charley didn't have to suffer from starvation or dehydration, though they did have to kill and eat the enemy horses because of lack of food and he did accidentally drink water from a river that was pink from blood because it was dark and he couldn't see that it was dirty. Charley also did suffer from dysentery, a sickness caused by inflammation of the intestines accompanied by bloody diarrhea, that can be deadly, but he didn't have it bad enough to kill him, unlike other soldiers all around him. He also was wounded by enemy fire, but it wasn't bad enough to kill him instantly. Many soldiers all around him were falling after they got shot, and they were dead before they even hit the ground. Charley, however, was fortunate enough to live long enough to get
