To start with, to be able to change people have to switch their thinking first.
For instance, in Soldier's Heart Charley changed by, “Charley broke rank and went to kneel beside him.”( Paulsen 52). This piece of evidence shows that it changed Charley because he cared for this man that was hurt even though he did not know him. He still tried to care for him even though he was not supposed to. Another example of Charley changing is, “ He wanted to kill them. He wanted to catch them and run his bayonet through them and kill them.”(Paulsen 50).
