The Characteristics of Son In the book Son, Claire was the main character. Claire at age 14 was chosen to be a birthmother (a girl who gives birth for a living). However, Claire’s first time ever giving birth was to a baby boy, whom she was not able to have direct contact with. Due to this, Claire becomes anxious and feels a longing for what she produced, which leads her to her journey to find her lost son. On her journey, Claire meets Einar, a man who has attempted to escape the village from his father, but unfortunately didn’t succeed and wounded himself badly. Einar learned plenty from his failure, however building up many of his characteristics. Though many people may say that Einar was just one of Claire’s close friends, Einar is the …show more content…
Einar demonstrates this knowledge by training Claire with certain training exercises such as toes workout. These specific body strengths are for certain challenges she will face. Einar also shows his knowledge when he makes this statement “There’s sun behind. The rain’s done for a while” (Lowry 139). This quote indicates that Einar is knowledgeable because he was able to observe the sky and interpret when it was best to escape. Einar’s knowledge on the sky was crucial. This character trait was shown throughout the entire time Einar and Claire were together. One example is when he instructs her to “Run up it. Grip with your feet” (Lowry 127). This quote shows the readers that during the training over the months, Einar was like a coach teaching her how it is to be done. Another example is when Einar said to her “next we begin to strengthen your arms” (Lowry 131). This statement as well proves that Einar knows what the next level is for his student as an instructor.
