The narrator started the line with “next” (line 1) which is quite striking because the word “next” connotes the continuance of something that has been in progress, yet the word starts at the beginning of the poem and this reveals the speaker’s sense of progression has been warped and next becomes the initial point start instead of a continuing point. The speaker continued through the line in a stammering manner with “ to of course god america i” (line 1). Paying attention to the phrase “of course” the speaker wants to reader to concur to something, however what that may be is not explicitly stated, nonetheless the words “god” and “america” were left uncapitalized, and both of these words are proper nouns. Thus, it can be insured that the is not only is the speaker grammatically incorrect, but Cummings is trying to undermine the influence that God and the U.S. government has on the readers lives. The speaker’s choice of words when they stated, “ land of the pilgrims and so forth” (line 2) instead of “pilgrims pride” revealed the discontinuity in their thinking as well as the lack of knowledge the speaker has for the country.
