Sophia Shin is an international student here at Dordt College. Her home country is South Korea, but she grew up in the Philippians with her family as missionaries. Today, Sophia is a sophomore on the track to get her elementary education degree. Being able to not just research Asian Americans, but also speaking with and getting to know someone from South Korea was a cool opportunity that gave us a new perspective.
During the interview we conducted with Sophia, we talked about her life here in the U.S., and how it was different for her. Americans and Asians tend to give up communicating because they can not understand each other. Here at Dordt, this issues is a big part of the awkwardness roommates can have when living with a Korean. Sophia told us that a lot of rooming situations do not work out because of the tiredness of conversation between each other. Concerned about the problem, we asked Sophia, “What can be done about racism and prejudice, in your opinion? How to fix this issue on campus?” Sophia told us that we could try fixing these issues by trying to understand their culture and learning their language. As future teachers, this comment stuck out because that is what we want to in our classrooms and in society. She also told us, that if Dordt Students are understanding and open to bring exchange students to try American things that is also helpful to fix this issue on campus. We continued
