Oedipus Tyrannus by Sophocles begins with King Oedipus trying to end the plague to his people, only to find out that it was can only be ended by finding and punishing former King Laius’s killer. Oedipus learns of his prophecy, which is that he will kill his father and marry his mother. In the end, Jocasta kills herself and Oedipus blinds himself, accepting his fate. In Oedipus Tyrannus, Sophocles reinforces the lesson of accepting one’s fate by leading Oedipus to finally recognize his inescapable fate, ending with him using his little free will to express his powerlessness.
