Conscience has often been regarded as an aspect of morality and one’s ability to choose from right and wrong. There are many individuals in society who have demonstrated the usage of their conscience through their way of living, actions, or accomplishments. One example being Soujourner Truth, a former African-American slave, who become known for life as an abolitionist, advocate for blacks, and women’s activist. Soujourner Truth, whose birth name was Isabelle Baumfree, was born in Ulster County, New York in 1797. Unfortunately, Truth was born into slavery where she encountered the many hardships of being slave such as the following: being separated by family members, enduring cruelty, and being traded and sold like property to several slaveholders.…show more content… In addition, she attended many religious gatherings, where she became a gifted speaker and pursed a life with evangelism (preaching the doctrines and teachings of Christianity). She left New York City and sought to preach God’s word. Truth taught of God’s love, power, and wisdom. Her journey as a preacher led to her addressing issues such as slavery and women’s rights, which were prevalent problems during her time period. Soujourner Truth sought to aid in resolving these problems through several ways- she formed a autobiography with Olive Gilbert of herself, in which she promoted. In addition, she attended women’s rights conference in Ohio in 1851, where she made a bold stance against the men, particularly white men, who opposed the idea of granting women the right to vote and acquiring legal protections. Truth dedicated much of her time and energy in tackling these issues as she made public lectures encouraging equality, submitted a proposal to Congress addressing these issues, and participate in the Freedom’s Bureau (agency dedicated to helping freed slaves in obtaining education, employment, fair treatment, homes, and relief) and other relief…show more content… She grew and remained strong in her faith and love for God. In addition, she applied God’s message to her life and sought to spread Jesus’ teachings to love one another and to treat each other equally.
