Soul music is a blending of African American gospel and rhythm and blues, but is not just the technical origins of the style that give it its name. Soul music is about bringing out the feelings you have deep down and how you show it through the music and its performance. The style became popular when singers like James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, and Sam Cooke came into the limelight during the 1960s. Each of these performers used their backgrounds in gospel music to give them a starting point in soul, but once they got onto their feet they found their way their own unique styles.
