Arthur Agastston developed the South Beach diet. The diet consists of consuming three meals, two snacks and a dessert. When you are on the South Beach diet you are eating nourishing fiber-rich carbohydrates that consist of vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains. You are allowed to eat good, unsaturated fats such as olive oil and canola oil. Lastly, you are able to consume many types of lean protein. The diet asks that you exercise daily and acquire a good night sleep. The diet is marketed to anyone who is looking to lose weight in a healthy matter. Arthur Agastston is a cardiologist and wrote the diet book, which was developed in the mid 1990s. Arthur Agastston also worked with a dietitian, Marie Almon at Mount Sinai Medical Center, located in Miami Beach, Florida. Also, you are supposed to remove sugary foods and refined starches. By restricting and eliminating foods for a long period of time, you can affect your health. When your body doesn’t eat certain foods for a while and once you bring those foods back, you can indulge and overeat. For a while, your body has been deprived from those foods and when you start to eat those foods again you could start to binge eat since you have been away from those certain foods. This can potentially lead to weight gain. The South Beach diet does not count calories, however the South Beach diet meal are 180 calories and other bars and smoothies are 100 calories. If the total intake calorie intake is lower than a person’s BMR, this can be dangerous to their health because they are not receiving all the essential nutrients for their body.
