During 2013 South Dakota drug and alcohol rehab programs enrolled 13,594 individuals. The leading substance of abuse sending residents into treatment was alcohol addiction, with 48.7% of all admissions citing alcohol as their primary substance of abuse. Following alcohol addiction, other substances of concern for South Dakota residents entering treatment included alcohol with a secondary drug (26.5%), marijuana (13.4%) and amphetamines (6.3%). The ratio of male to female clients in treatment for this year was 70.4% male and 29.6% female.
