The Northern part of the United States went to war with the Southern part in the year 1861, What caused this war was the differences in the society, economy, geography, and transportation. These were the differences in both societies that lead the Union to have a war within itself. Before the war people had many different beliefs and this is where society comes in. What leads to society’s beliefs would have been the economy types which were affected by the geography, since the North had a really industrious economy with a high population it had more power in the house of representatives. The South didn’t like being judged by the North for having slaves so they had seceded from the Union.

The South could grow plenty of crops, but there was one issue, there was no easy way to produce cash crops. Slavery had almost died in the South’s society until the cotton gin was invented which allowed plantations to quickly clean cotton and sell it at a faster rate and make a lot of money. This had brought back slaves to do nothing but pick cotton while one would run it through the gin and then they sold the cotton. The railroad in the South was poor compared to the North’s. The South didn’t view trains as a luxury like the North did that’s why the South’s trains were only used for transporting cotton. The steamboat, however was used greatly by the South in the sense of it was used to transport cotton to the North. During the war, both sides used steamboats for transporting supplies and troops. The South had captured a ship and turned it into an Ironclad, which is a regular steamboat with an iron shell, so the North had built an ironclad of their own and neither ship could take the other down. This would have been a very good turning point in the war, having a ship that is unsinkable and could transport units and supplies would have worked great in the South’s favor since they didn’t have as good of a railroad as the
