Draft 1 STOWN Why would Brian Reed, a radio guy from New York, go to Woodstock, Alabama? To unfold a piece of contemporary Southern Gothic Literature, of course. Stown brings light to contemporary Southern Gothic Literature. It is a refreshing example of this rising genre. In Stown there are all of the classic elements of Southern Gothic Literature, but what makes it contemporary is the way in which it is told. StTown is a piece of contemporary Ssouthern Ggothic Lliterature because it deals with elements like decay, irony, and violence. In classic Ssouthern Ggothic Lliterature decay is usually based around decaying houses, neighborhoods, and communities.y, but iIn contemporary Ssouthern Ggothic Lliterature decay can also deals with the decay of people's health, specifically people’s mental health. Brian explains that “A fight broke out, and then suddenly, this dude Dylan—not Dylan Nichols, as John had told me—he was not involved—but another Dylan with a different last name, came up from behind with a knife and cut Kabrahm's buddy, Tim, in the neck.” This violence is between a couple of white guys over a few insults spat at each other. The fight here has nothing to do with race, but with the fact that this was their first instinct when they felt threatened. Another example would be when Tyler was talking about his grandfather’s guns being stolen, “And I was going to cut a finger or two off. I mean, I was going to snip fingers until he had my guns delivered back here.” This is further evidence that violence is just second nature to people like Tyler. This is obviously not how a person should react to their property being stolen, but it is so naturalized in the south that he doesn’t see how wrong it
