Introduction

There are many levels of shame after sexual abuse. Shame is the inner feeling of being worthless and rejected. Shame places a burden on survivors and leaves them feeling flawed and unwanted. Survivors of childhood sexual abuse often feel that their mind and heart are at odds and face post-trauma symptoms such as depression and anxiety. Before they start writing, the group leader will ask the members of the group to take a deep breath and clear their mind. The group leader will ask each member to write about the shame they carry from their traumatic experience and how shame has affected their life. Once they finish writing, each group member will fold their piece of paper until it is at its smallest. After all group members have finished writing and folding their paper, they will move to the tarped area and select from a variety of seeds from the table. Once they select their seed, they will fill their pot halfway with compost. It may have been a teacher, a friend, a friend’s parent, or a relative. If a member cannot think of someone in their life who has been compassionate towards them, they can reference a public figure or a character from a book, movie, or show. The group leader will ask each member to notice the feelings and sensations that come up with this memory. The group leader will ask them to imagine that they can become as compassionate toward themselves as this person has been toward them (or how they imagine this person would be towards them). How would you treat yourself if you were feeling overwhelmed with sadness or shame? What kinds of words would you use to talk to yourself? Each member of the group will decorate their pot with these kind words that they would like to use the next time they feel overwhelmed with shame. Finally, each member will water the soil and place it in the sunlight. With the right conditions and loving care, this seed has the capability to blossom into a beautiful flower or nourishing plant. After placing the plant in the sunlight, each member will return to their seat to process the activity. The growth and renewal of this plant can become a symbol of hope for the future.
