Before the defeat of the Spanish Armada, Spain was the home of many of Europes leading dynasties, including that of the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V. Even though Charles V was not king of Spain at the time of the Armada, he was still in control of Philip II, who ruled over Spain at the time, through religious power. For this reason, Charles’ grandson and Philip’s nephew, () Alexander Farnese was one of the Armada’s leaders on land, stationed in the Netherlands and the areas surrounding. () Farnese was working to extinguish Dutch Rebellion in the Netherlands when he was called to aid the Spanish Armada. Unfortunately, word of the Armada’s imminent approach reached him too late, causing the Armada to wait in the waters near Gravelines. () The Spanish had expected the majority of their fighting to be on land, where military expertise would be needed. Unfortunately for them, word had gotten to the English Monarchs of the Spanish Armada’s plan to reclaim England and return it to catholic faith, and the English had sent their navy to keep the Spanish from setting foot on English soil. After many battles and little to no rest, the Spanish experienced a typhus epidemic that wiped out many of their soldiers and sailors. Along side the epidemic, the crew members also experienced scurvy and malnourishment, especially the soldiers, who were not accustom to prolonged amounts of time on a ship. Morale on Spanish ships diminished and, tired and sickly, the Spanish Armada attempted to return to Spain by heading North around Scotland.
