() The Spanish had expected the majority of their fighting to be on land, where military expertise would be needed. Unfortunately for them, word had gotten to the English Monarchs of the Spanish Armada’s plan to reclaim England and return it to catholic faith, and the English had sent their navy to keep the Spanish from setting foot on English soil. After many battles and little to no rest, the Spanish experienced a typhus epidemic that wiped out many of their soldiers and sailors. Along side the epidemic, the crew members also experienced scurvy and malnourishment, especially the soldiers, who were not accustom to prolonged amounts of time on a ship. Morale on Spanish ships diminished and, tired and sickly, the Spanish Armada attempted to return to Spain by heading North around Scotland.
