Lycurgus believed that if he did this they would be better able to climb hills and descend steep inclines with less danger. He also thought that the boys would be able to leap, jump and run more nimbly than a boy with sandals. All throughout their training they had a single garment, because Lycurgus thought that this would make them more prepared to for the changes of heat and cold.As far as the food went during the training there was such a moderate amount so the boys would know what it was like to go without food, for Lycurgus believed that they would be better able to continue with an empty stomach if necessary, and also to go without food entirely.
