Bio-Psycho-Social Assessment
Demographics
David is a 34 year old male who has been in supported living ever since he was twenty due to his mother’s death. The father could not cope with his needs as he was adversely affecting him. Presently, David lives with six other patients in a supporting facility. His father visits him twice a month and calls once a month, and they have a relatively good relationship. David had spastic hemiplegia cerebral palsy due to brain impairment at birth. Spastic hemiplegia is a type of cerebral palsy. It is inability of the muscle to relax and its affects one side of the body.
Due to his reduced muscle tone he uses a walking frame to avoid injury as he frequently falls. He is on antacid medicine due to his gastro oesophagus reflux, a condition which develops when the stomach content causes troublesome symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, and poor weight gain.

If David had appeared normal at birth he may have been diagnosed with spastic hemiplegia at around five months old. This is because voluntary hand usually develops fully at around this age, hence possibilities of the symptoms of this condition to be noticeable earlier

Not all spastic hemiplegia patients have symptoms related to the medical condition. Some patients are affected mildly, while others suffer severely. Sometimes spastic hemiplegia may disappear with age. Spastic hemiplegia can result to difficulty with movement, whereby a patient cannot balance properly. Carrying out various tasks with the hands may also be difficult, thus writing, sewing, coloring and many more may pose a challenge.
