Introduction Spirituality and resilience are vital to overcoming seemingly impossible circumstances. Dees (2011) mentions, “Pain and suffering are consequences of this evil, and none of us are immune to them” (p. 35). Every person will be faced with hardship and pain, but how we choose to overcome is larger than what seems like a never-ending cycle. By choosing to be resilient and by choosing to include spirituality, individuals can better grow spiritually and mentally. Spirituality and resilience help provide a clear understanding of suffering. Trauma is defined as “an emotional response to a terrible event like an accident, rape or natural disaster…shock and denial are typical” (APA, 2017). Trauma can be physically, mentally, and emotionally charged. Therefore, overcoming this trauma can take time, and its effects can often last a lifetime. Resilience and spirituality provide the framework for overcoming this trauma. Glenn (2014) points out, “Attaching positive meaning to suffering likewise helps childhood survivors navigate reoccurring stressors” (p. 40). Spirituality and resilience can help individuals with coping strategies. Peres, Moreira, Nasello, and Koenig (2007) mention, “A nationwide survey of stress reactions in the U.S. after September 11th found that turning to religion (prayer, religion, or spiritual feelings) was the second most common way of coping (90 %)” (p. 344). Spirituality and resilience give individuals the means necessary to positively move forward with their lives. In terms of spirituality, individuals develop a sense of purpose and understanding of relationship security in Christ. Chandiramani (2014) states, “Results suggested that spirituality and resilience is related to higher levels of psychological well-being” (p. 171-172).
