The Role of Spirituality in Overcoming Addictions
The purpose of this paper will identify what the role of spirituality in overcoming addiction is, why it is necessary to incorporate spirituality into treatment plans, and how spirituality benefits the abuser of an addiction. Doctors and clinicians around the world all have varying views and treatment plans on how to overcome addictions. Although there is one similarity mental health professionals all share. It is the fact that their foundations are all the study of psychology. The word psychology is the combination of two key terms, the word study derives from ology and the word mind derives from psyche (Zimmer). Therefore the condition of the psyche is critical in determining whether an individual is healthy; mentally, physically, and spiritually. Spirituality is generally considered an individual set of beliefs and practices that may include religiosity whereas religion tends to refer to a social phenomenon (Miller, 1998). Moreover research has found that the necessity of incorporating spirituality into treatment plans is extremely crucial to alleviate the problems of addictions and simultaneously boost morale/attitude. Lastly, research has shown the benefits of having consistent experiences of spirituality while overcoming addiction have proven one important point. The longer the addict has consistent spiritual guidance, the more unlikely it is to relapse. In conclusion the most significant part of the research conducted was the understanding of the serenity prayer.
