Analysis:
Diagnosis: In the movie, Split, Kevin would be diagnosed with a dual diagnosis. This because Kevin has Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) and has a moderate case of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
Disorder Characteristics: In the movie, Kevin is shown to have 23 different personalities and a supposed 24th personality that is unhuman like. All of the identities initially know of another and can shut out other unwanted personalities. The 5 personalities that were shown in the film were seen to have different IQ levels, maturity levels in some cases, and very overwhelmed. In addition with his DID he also has shown signs of OCD by having unrealistic thoughts from one of his other personalities to kidnap …show more content…
In addition, his father at a young age, abandoned him at a train station. I believe his condition can mainly be explained through the psychoanalytic model and the biological model. I believe because Kevin experienced so many traumas at such a young age, it caused a sudden change in his brain activity. In addition, when Kevin’s 23 other personalities take control over his body, his Id is present the most and likes to stay in control over the his body and sure that Kevin’s Ego, never resurfaces.
Stereotypes:
Some common stereotypes that I saw in this movie was that people who are diagnosed with DID Disorder can be aggressive depending on which personality has control over the host’s body. Most of the personalities that were shown in the film were shown to have different styles of clothing whenever he interacted with one of the girls. Finally, Kevin was shown to live underneath the Zoo’s maintenance building that seem mostly inaccessible to others besides his co-workers who rarely checked on him. …show more content…
During his sessions with her, to me, it sounded like his psychologist tried to use the humanistic and psychoanalytic model on him. She often tried to help him overcome his irrational thoughts coming from his Id and tried to make sure he could improve his own self concept of himself. Her treatment sadly, was not successful and Kevin still had persisting thoughts of a 24th personality known as the “beast”.
Conclusion & Recommendation: In the movie, Split, Kevin is diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) and has a moderate case of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Kevin is shown to have 23 different personalities and a rumored 24th personality known as “the beast”. In addition Kevin’s OCD, he had unrealistic reoccurring thoughts of wanting to kidnap 3 young girls and having a personality known as “the beast”. The main cause of Kevin’s disorder is from Kevin’s childhood abuse from his mother at a young age and his father leaving him at a young age at a train station. And I believe since Kevin experienced these traumatic traumas at such a young age, this change Kevin’s brain activity and his Id, was mostly in control of his body. The movie showed several stereotypes that associate with DID such as: being aggressive, not able to live a normal life, and each of
