What is a sponge?
I have a toy where you think of an animal and the toy tries to guess it. When it asked me if the animal I was thinking of was a sponge I wondered why the toy was talking about a cleaning product. Ever since I learned that sponges were actually an animal that lives in the water I always wanted to learn about them. A sponge is an animal that lives in the water. There are more than 5,000 different kinds of sponges. 99% of sponges live in marine water, but they can also live in fresh and saltwater. Sponges are attached to rock or coral reef at the bottom of the water where they do not get sunlight. The sponge does not like sunlight. Adult sponges are also called sessile because theyŕe attached to one rock or coral all of their life. Sponges are also filter feeders which means that they collect food from the water that moves through their bodies. The sponge is made up of cells of two layers. The sponge´s skeleton on the other hand is made of spicules if itś a hard sponge and spongin if itś a soft sponge. Over a lot of years of studying scientists found out that sponges are actually animals. They didn´t find out they were animals until scientists watched them eat. Even though their plants, sponges really just look like weird plants. Sponges basically lack every characteristic as regular animals like swimming or walking. Though there is nothing alike with a known animal like a lion sponges are really the most multi cellular animal.
